Textile science boomed in the mid-20th century due to major chemical breakthroughs. Nylon, polyester, and later spandex were developed for their strength, stretch and durability, quickly replacing natural fibers and becoming increasingly popular during the fitness boom of the ’70s and ‘80s. Features like antimicrobial coatings and compression technology followed, leading to the moisture-wicking, stretchy, easy-care activewear we’re familiar with today from mainstream brands.

While synthetics have become the standard in activewear, growing awareness of the environmental and health impacts is fueling a shift, as consumers seek to minimize chemical and plastic exposure, reduce their environmental footprint, and live healthier lives.

Some activewear brands have begun incorporating natural fibers into their product lines, but even 1% synthetic polyester material in a garment requires the use of artificial dye, making it extremely challenging to produce truly all-natural activewear. Skin irritation
Traditional activewear is often treated with synthetic chemical dyes and finishes that can cause skin irritation, rashes and contact dermatitis, as well as prompt or exacerbate allergies.

Hormone disruption
Many synthetic fabrics contain or are treated with endocrine-disrupting chemicals and PFAs (“forever chemicals”), which can affect hormone function, reproduction, metabolism, and immune health.

Inhalation risks
Synthetic clothing sheds microplastic fibers during wear. When inhaled or absorbed through the skin, they can potentially cause inflammation, respiratory issues, and accumulation in organs over time.

Non-breathable
Polyester-based fabrics and synthetic chemical finishes can reduce breathability and trap in heat and moisture. This creates an ideal breeding ground for bacteria and fungi, worsening acne, fungal infections, and body odor.

Environmental Impact

  • Synthetic fabrics, which are essentially plastics, are made from petrochemicals derived from fossil fuels, and they don’t biodegrade. While recycled options offer a slight improvement, they still contribute to environmental harm. Every time this clothing is washed, microplastics shed into waterways and accumulate in marine ecosystems before entering the food chain.
